Can Public Bins Be Used as Advertising Space?

Public bins are usually viewed as practical infrastructure, but they can also provide valuable space for advertising, sponsorship and community messaging.

Bins are often installed in highly visible locations, including shopping precincts, parks, sporting facilities, schools and busy pedestrian areas. Adding branded artwork to these bins can help organisations make better use of an asset that is already part of the streetscape.

Astra Street Furniture’s Athens Bin Enclosure can be supplied with vinyl-wrapped door panels that allow advertising and branding to be updated without replacing the entire bin.

What can public bins be used to promote?

Depending on the location, bin panels may be used to feature:

  • Local business advertising
  • Event sponsors
  • Council campaigns and community messages
  • School, sporting club or facility branding
  • Waste and recycling education
  • Seasonal promotions or upcoming events

For councils and facility managers, selling or offering advertising space may also help generate sponsorship revenue or offset some of the cost of providing and maintaining public bins.

Why use the Athens Bin for advertising?

The Athens Bin is particularly well suited to advertising because its door panels can be customised with vinyl artwork.

The artwork can incorporate logos, campaign graphics, promotional messages or information relevant to the surrounding area. This allows the bin to become part of a broader signage or branding strategy while continuing to perform its main waste-management function.

Importantly, the advertising is not permanent. When a sponsor changes, a campaign finishes or the branding needs to be refreshed, the artwork on the panel can be replaced.

Astra Street Furniture has previously customised Athens Bin Enclosures for Ferncourt Public School, adding the school’s logo to the front of the bin doors. The same approach can be used for sponsor logos, advertising campaigns, event promotions or other branded messages.

How are the advertising panels updated?

Updating the artwork is a relatively simple process.

The client removes the relevant door panel from the bin and sends it back to Astra Street Furniture. Our team removes the existing vinyl and applies the new approved artwork before returning the panel so it can be reinstalled.

There is no need to send back the complete bin or purchase a new enclosure simply because the advertising has changed.

This makes it practical to update the panels for a new sponsor, a different campaign, refreshed branding or replacement of vinyl that has been damaged or vandalised.

A more cost-effective way to keep branding current

Replacing an entire public bin because its branding is outdated or one panel has been damaged would be expensive and wasteful.

The removable door panel on the Athens Bin allows the artwork to be refreshed when required. If the panel itself remains in good condition, the old vinyl can simply be removed and new artwork applied.

This extends the useful life of the bin and allows the surrounding streetscape to remain current without unnecessary replacement costs.

Make more of an existing public asset

Public bins are installed where people naturally see and use them every day. With vinyl-wrapped door panels, those bins can also provide a practical platform for sponsorship, advertising and public information.

The Athens Bin makes it easy to change the message when required. Rather than replacing the whole bin, clients can send the panel back to Astra Street Furniture so the existing vinyl can be removed and new artwork applied.
