Should I Choose Bolt-Down or In-Ground Installed Furniture?
One common question we hear when helping customers select outdoor furniture is: “Should I choose bolt-down or in-ground installation?”
The answer depends on a few key factors, including your surface type, how permanent the installation needs to be, and what sort of use the furniture is likely to experience. In this article, we’ll walk you through when to use each option and how to make the right choice for your project.
What’s the Difference Between Bolt-Down and In-Ground?
Bolt-down furniture is secured to a hard surface, typically concrete or paved areas, using bolts through base plates on the legs.
In-ground furniture is installed by embedding the legs directly into the ground, often into concrete footings, providing a permanent fixture.
Both options are durable and secure, but they serve slightly different purposes depending on the context.
When to Choose Bolt-Down Installation
Bolt-down furniture is ideal for projects where:
- You’re installing on an existing concrete slab or paved area.
- There may be a future need to remove or relocate the furniture.
- You want faster installation times with minimal surface disruption.
- There’s limited underground clearance, such as near utilities or in rooftop spaces.
Bolt-down furniture is common in schools, urban centres and shopping centre forecourts, where quick and neat installation is preferred.
A great example of this is our project at Capella Reserve, where bolt down picnic settings and seats were installed on concrete slabs to provide low-maintenance outdoor community spaces.
At Astra Street Furniture, all our bolt-down options are engineered for strength and stability. With the correct fixings and proper surface preparation, bolt-down settings can perform just as reliably as in-ground alternatives.
When to Choose In-Ground Installation
- In-ground furniture is the preferred option when:
- You’re working in grass, turf, gravel, or bare soil areas.
- The installation is intended to be permanent and/or tamper-resistant.
- You want maximum durability and stability in high-use environments.
- The furniture is in a location vulnerable to vandalism or theft.
Parks, open spaces, playgrounds, and council reserves are all great examples where in-ground installation offers the greatest longevity and peace of mind.
One example is our project at Doonside Public School, where in-ground installation was used for benches installed beneath trees in grassy and soil areas.
Can I Use Both?
Yes. Some customers choose a mix of bolt-down and in-ground installation across the same site, depending on surface conditions and access. For example, in a public park you might bolt down furniture under a concrete shelter but install other pieces in-ground near the open lawn.
Choose bolt-down installation when you're working with a hard surface and might need future flexibility. Choose in-ground installation when permanence, stability, and resistance to interference are your top priorities.
