Can I Install Bins on Sloping Ground?

A common question we get regarding installation and use of our range of bins is: "Is it okay to install my bins on a sloping surface?"

The short answer to this question is no, you should not install bins directly onto a sloping surface as it will affect the structural integrity of the bin and cause damage.

Let's dive into the reasons behind this and provide some practical alternatives to help you out.

The Importance of a Level Ground:

Installing bins on sloping ground is not recommended due to the issues it can cause. The most significant concern is that the bin doors will not hang properly. You can see at a glance if a bin is out of level by checking if the gap over the door is parallel or more open on one side. If the gap is not a consistent and parallel then the bin is out of level or twisted. When installed on an angle, the doors can become misaligned and difficult to operate, which can lead to damage to the bin hinges and door over time. An improperly hung door can compromise the bin's structural integrity, leading to more serious damage and potential safety risks. Another concern is around waste overflow. When the bin is installed on a slope, the waste will fill the liner unevenly resulting in overflow.

The Solution - Levelling the Ground Before Installation:

So, if you need to install your bins in an area where sloping ground cannot be avoided, what should you do? Well, there are several options available to you.

  1. One possible solution is to create a level base for your bin. This could involve constructing a timber platform or forming a concrete base on which the bin can sit. This base should be level and secure to prevent any movement or shifting of the bin. This method should be used for slopes with steep gradients.
  2. Another alternative is to use a flow grout base. This method involves using a liquid concrete mix that fills in any low spots or depressions in the ground, creating a flat, level surface upon which the bin can be installed. This method is best used for surfaces with a gentle slope where only a small adjustment is required.
  3. In some cases, you may be able to create your own adjustable feet using threaded rods and adjustable nuts either side of the base plate. These components can be used to make minor adjustments to the bin's position and ensure it sits level, even on slightly uneven ground.
  4. Onto softscape areas or synthetic turf areas, an easy solution is to scrape the ground level and create a good base by placement of a precast 900x900x50mm concrete paver onto which the bin can be fastened down.

While it might seem like a quick fix to install bins on sloping ground, the potential damage and complications it can cause are not worth the risk. By taking the time to create a level base for your bin, you can ensure it remains secure, functional, and in good condition for years to come.
