About Greygums Oval Bush Food Trail

The Cranebrook Bush Food Trail is a newly established feature along the Great West Walk, located in Cranebrook, New South Wales. This trail, developed through a collaboration between Penrith City Council, Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services, and the local Aboriginal organisation Muru-Mittigar, is designed to educate visitors about the traditional foods sourced by Aboriginal peoples from the land.

The Requirement

To provide seating, shade and accessible water fountains to enhance the overall comfort of visitors, especially in the warmer months, making the trail a more welcoming and usable space for longer periods.

The Challenges

  • Accessibility Compliance: Ensuring that the products meet all relevant standards for accessibility under the Disability Discrimination Act is crucial. This includes considerations for seating height, and space for wheelchair users. Water fountains must be operable by individuals with varying levels of strength and mobility.
  • Durability and Weather Resistance: Given that the trail is an outdoor space, the selected products need to withstand various weather conditions, including rain, heat, and UV exposure.
  • Vandalism Resistance: Public amenities, especially in accessible outdoor areas, can be prone to vandalism. Selecting products with vandal-resistant features, such as reinforced structures or materials that are difficult to deface, can help maintain the quality and usability of the facilities.
  • Maintenance Requirements: Products should require minimal maintenance to keep them in good working order. For instance, seating should be easy to clean and repair if damaged.

The Solution

After evaluating the challenges and  requirements, our client selected a few key products, including the Barcelona Setting with Benches - Single End Accessible, Manchester Cantilever 4x4 Shelter and Venice Water Fountain - DDA Compliant.

The  Barcelona Setting with Benches - Single End Accessible offers the following features:

  • Wheelchair Accessibility: The setting is designed with a single end accessible, providing ample space for wheelchair users to comfortably sit and engage with others. This feature is crucial for meeting DDA compliance and ensuring inclusivity.
  • Durable Materials: The setting is constructed with materials that are highly durable and weather-resistant, such as powder-coated steel frames and hardwood or composite slats. This makes it ideal for outdoor use, where exposure to the elements is a concern.
  • Ergonomic Design: The benches are designed with ergonomics in mind, providing comfortable seating for extended periods. This design consideration is essential for ensuring that all visitors, including those with disabilities, can rest comfortably.
  • Low Maintenance: The materials used are not only durable but also low-maintenance, requiring minimal upkeep over time. This is beneficial for a public trail where maintenance resources may be limited.

The Manchester Cantilever 4x4 Shelter offers the following features:

  • Cantilever Design: The shelter features a cantilever design, providing an unobstructed view and easier access from all sides. This is particularly useful for accommodating groups and ensuring accessibility for all users, including those in wheelchairs.
  • Robust Construction: Made from high-quality, weather-resistant materials, the Manchester Cantilever Shelter is built to withstand harsh outdoor conditions. It is typically constructed using powder-coated steel and durable roofing materials that resist rust, corrosion, and UV damage.
  • Size and Coverage: The 4x4 metre size offers ample coverage, providing a large shaded area to protect visitors from sun and rain. This size is suitable for accommodating multiple seating arrangements or large gatherings. Our Manchester Cantilever Shelter is also available in larger 5x4 metre and 6x4 metre sizes.
  • Minimal Maintenance: The materials and design are chosen to require minimal maintenance, which is advantageous for public spaces that may have limited resources for regular upkeep.

The Venice Water Fountain offers the following features:

  • DDA Compliance: The fountain is designed to meet the standards set by the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), ensuring it is accessible to people with disabilities. This includes appropriate height and easy operation for wheelchair users.
  • Integrated Dog Bowl: The fountain includes a dog bowl at the base, catering to pet owners who visit the trail with their dogs. This feature makes it convenient for all visitors, including those with pets, to stay hydrated.
  • Bottle Filler: It has an integrated bottle filler, allowing visitors to refill reusable bottles easily. This feature promotes sustainability by encouraging the use of refillable bottles instead of single-use plastics.
  • Stainless Steel Finish: The fountain is made with a durable stainless steel finish, which is resistant to corrosion, rust, and vandalism. It is ideal for outdoor environments and requires minimal maintenance.
